John Newbold (14 December 1952 in Jacksdale - 15 May 1982 in Coleraine) was a British Grand Prix motorcycle road racer. Newbold was brought up in South Normanton, where his parents ran a butchers shop. He got the bug riding on grass when he was 15. He quickly progressed from riding at Darley Moor on a bike loaned to him by Derby's John Cooper, to performing in front of 50,000 crowds at Silverstone. Ironically, a 'lucky' pools win allowed him to buy a bigger bike and break into the big time. His best season was in 1976 when he finished in fifth place in the 500cc world championship riding a Suzuki motorcycle. Newbold won his only world championship race in 1976 at the 500cc Czechoslovakian Grand Prix. He was a team-mate of the legendary Barry Sheene and Mick Grant at Suzuki. Newbold had a plate put in his leg after a fall at Oulton Park in 1979 but was fit enough to make his debut at the Isle of Mann TT's in 1981, finishing a creditable fourth and third. Also in 1981, "Joe 90" as John was sometimes nicknamed, was the top points scorer for Great Britain in the now legendary Transatlantic Trophy competition between 'star' British and American riders of the day. Newbold had some good scraps with his local rival, Henshaw, and was looking forward to doing battle with Joey Dunlop and Smalley's Ron Haslam in Ireland. The opening Superbike race held in the 1982 North West 200 at Coleraine circuit, was a round of the English based Motor Cycle News Superbike Championship. Newbold ran into the rear tyre of Mick Grant's machine at 130mph on lap two, crashed into a wall at Juniper Hill and was killed instantly. Haslam (Honda) and Roger Marshall (Suzuki) withdrew from the remainder of the meeting, but Grant went on to win the race. This was the fifth fatality at Coleraine in the space of four years. As a result of Newbold's fatal accident, the course was changed and a chicane was introduced, to reduce the speed of machines around the final corner.〔 http://www.nottinghampost.com/Henshaw-150th-victim-Isle-Man/story-19292234-detail/story.html#Z78Jqrk565k3iE50.99 〕〔(John Newbold career statistics at MotoGP.com )〕 He was 29 years old.
